Despite the 49ers consistently proving they rarely like to do transfer business in January, Leeds United continue to be linked with players.
Folarin Balogun and Conor Gallagher are some of the players we’ve been linked to this week, although both deals are unlikely.
Sevilla winger Miguel Sierra is another player we are said to be looking at. But a potential move that, on paper, seems unlikely in the first place is not expected until next summer, according to reports.
Now, the door appears to be open for the Whites to sign a player they have been linked with previously. At one point, this arguably would’ve been a good signing; now it’s one United must swerve.
Leeds United could potentially secure permanent deal for Liverpool midfielder in January
According to a report via Football Insider, Leeds could be given the chance to sign Harvey Elliott on a permanent transfer during the January transfer window.
Elliott is a name United supporters are used to seeing linked with a move to Elland Road at this point.
Whilst at one point, it would’ve appeared to be a shrewd signing, the 23-year-old’s stock has plummeted after a loan spell last season at Aston Villa in which Unai Emery rarely played Elliott, so the midfielder would not rack up enough appearances to trigger the clause to make his move permanent.
This season, Elliott is out on loan once again, this time at Valencia. However, according to that same report, the La Liga outfit is ready to terminate his loan in January.
Up to this point, the Englishman has certainly not made the best impression abroad.
Elliott is yet to start a single game in La Liga. He has only made six cameo appearances in total, playing a combined 152 minutes. (Sofascore)
During this limited game time, Elliott has yet to score or assist.
Spanish media blast Harvey Elliott after recent display
Elliott’s most recent appearance for Valencia came against Villarreal. Despite being subbed on in the 70th minute, Elliott did not last until full time, picking up two bookings and being sent off as a result.
Naturally, the Spanish media were very critical of Elliott in the aftermath of the game.
Super Deporte labelled Elliott a “child” and gave his recent display a 0/10.
When justifying the decision, they said, “That he learns Spanish is the least of it. It is more necessary that he learns what it is to wear the Valencia CF shirt.
“Sent off for protesting. Instead of thinking about winning the game, he started doing what he didn’t have to do with the referee.”
Given he’d previously played under Jurgen Klopp and can operate as a midfielder or even out on the right wing, there was a point where I’d have gladly taken Elliott at Elland Road.
But certainly not now. And not in January.
We’ll see if any more reliable sources link us with Elliott over the coming weeks. But if we are in for him, it’s a deal we simply must swerve.
