Despite the Premier League campaign not even being 10 games old yet, there’s been plenty of Leeds United transfer talk in recent days.
Last week, reports emerged linking Man United with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January. However, it’s since been reported that the forward is expected to sign a new deal at Leeds United.
Now, the Whites have been linked with a signing of their own in January.
But the player in question, who is currently at Tottenham, is one we should stay clear of.
Leeds United have Conor Gallagher on their ‘watch list’, per reports
Following our 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth over the weekend, all eyes are on our next Premier League fixture, which comes against Spurs at Elland Road.
However, we have unexpectedly been linked with one of their players recently. FussballNews have reported that Leeds, alongside Aston Villa and Everton, are looking into possibly signing Tottenham midfielder Conor Gallagher.
United, as well as Everton and Villa, are said to have placed Gallagher on their “watch list”. It is said we could potentially test Tottenham’s resolve in January. Although Gallagher only signed for Spurs in January this year after leaving Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £35million.
The report does not state how much Spurs would demand to let Gallagher leave in January. But you would imagine they’d ideally want to make their money back on the Englishman at least in any potential sale.
Roberto De Zerbi has only handed Gallagher a start in three of Tottenham’s Premier League games so far, as the midfielder has been subbed on to help see out games as of late.
Despite this, the Italian manager is said not to want to lose the midfielder in January. So this potential move could be shut down before it even gets the chance to gain legs.
A few more reasons why we shouldn’t sign Conor Gallagher
Nothing we have seen or heard from our club’s hierarchy previously would lead me to believe that we’d be signing a player for £30+million in January.
Also, Gallagher is on an absolute fortune at Tottenham. Reports from The Guardian earlier this year suggest that the midfielder is earning £200,000 a week in North London.
So if the 49ers were thinking about bringing in the former Chelsea man, which I doubt in the first place, these wage demands would surely make them reconsider.
Another reason why we shouldn’t be entertaining this deal in the first place is the sort of player Gallagher is. He has bags of energy and covers ground in midfield well. But he is limited, especially in the final third.
He is a very similar profile of player to Sean Longstaff, in fact. Given the current makeup of our squad, we do not need to upgrade on Longstaff in January. Especially not for the price Gallagher will likely cost.
If we are going to spend that amount of money on a player in the future, it has to be a new winger for me.
Over the weekend, it proved that if Noah Okafor is out, our quality out wide drops off a cliff. So that’s an area of Daniel Farke’s squad that needs to be addressed more urgently, but for any significant business like this, I think we’ll hold off until next summer.
