Leeds United’s attack has been a big talking point so far this season.
United have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League. We have conceded six goals in the opening eight games. But that is not where the issue lies for Daniel Farke’s side.
Our troubles this season have come at the top end of the pitch, our most recent game against Sunderland being a perfect example of this.
However, according to the latest reports from Sky Sports, adding that extra firepower in the final third could be something that is already on the 49ers’ agenda for Leeds.
Leeds United scouting Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo
Geny Catamo, 25, is reportedly the player whose performances Leeds are said to have overseen. This is according to a report from Sacha Tavolieri for Sky Sports.
The Mozambique international is a left-footed right winger. He has scored one goal and provided four assists in nine league appearances for Sporting CP in Liga Portugal this season.
He also scored once in the Champions League this season. The winger’s goal came against Galatasaray in September. (Sofascore)
Leeds are not the only club who are said to be scouting Catamo however. Newcastle, Everton, Bournemouth and Brentford are among those who are keeping an eye on him.
But if Leeds do want to sign Catamo, it seems as though they are fighting an uphill battle. The report suggests that Sunderland are the club with the most interest in the winger.
The Black Cats were reportedly ready to offer around £33.5million to secure Catamo’s services last summer. Sporting, on the other hand, demanded that the 25-year-old’s release clause be met if Sunderland wanted to sign him. This sits at around £50.2million.
The report also suggests Sunderland would be willing to go back in for Catamo in January. However, they are not willing to bid above £29.3million for him in the winter transfer window.
Personally, I don’t think we’ll sign Geny Catamo in January
I’m not expecting us to sign Catamo in January. Especially when considering what we’ve seen of the 49ers in previous January transfer windows.
Even more so if Sporting are demanding that his release clause of over £50million be met.
If Sunderland don’t get a deal for Catamo done in January or early next summer, the winger could be a player we, as a fanbase, have to keep an eye on as a potential target.
Due to the number of clubs reportedly interested, any deal for Catamo would not be a straightforward one, you would imagine if the 49ers stepped up their interest in him.
Whether we sign Catamo or not, if this early report is anything to go by, the final third is where the bulk of our budget will be spent next summer. With what we’ve seen so far from Farke’s men, it looks to be the obvious area we need to strengthen.
