After signing for Leeds United back in 2024, Jayden Bogle has gone on to become one of Daniel Farke’s most important players.
The £5million the 49ers forked out to bring Bogle to Elland Road has proven to be one of the best pieces of business they’ve conducted.
Especially when you consider the form Bogle has showcased not only in the Championship, but in the Premier League too.
Now, the defender has opened up about his decision to snub his former manager, Chris Wilder and Sheffield United before moving to the biggest club in Yorkshire.
Chris Wilder didn’t want to lose Jayden Bogle back in 2024
At the time, Wilder was less than impressed to be losing Bogle, especially to us. The Sheffield United manager had this to say about the move.
“That was a disappointing one to lose, but we move on,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield back in 2024.
“He ran his contract down, so this is the difficult part of it, positions that clubs get put into.
“Absolutely, 100 per cent, in an ideal world we don’t want players to run their contracts down. I can’t put a gun to his head and put a pen in his hand to sign a contract for Sheffield United.
“He made it clear this week to me that he saw his future elsewhere. He saw his future at Leeds United. The best thing when players do that is try to get the best price possible. Hopefully Sheffield United fans don’t see him in a poor light because he’s done well for us. He’s somebody we enjoyed working with.
“He was an outstanding player for us. We’d have loved to have been in the position to negotiate and sign a longer contract. But when he doesn’t, we have to make decisions. And when he wants to play up the road, we have to get the best price, and I think we’ve got a reasonable price for him.”
Jayden Bogle gives his side of events regarding Leeds United move
With Bogle quickly developing into one of the best full-backs/wing-backs in the Premier League, it’s clear that the £5million fee for the Englishman was a bargain for Leeds as opposed to a “reasonable price” for Sheffield United, as Wilder put it.
Us Leeds fans are continuing to bang the drum regarding Bogle receiving an England call-up, which is overdue at this point.
The 26-year-old made a recent appearance on The Official Leeds United Podcast, where he revealed his side of events regarding his move to Elland Road.
“As soon as I heard Leeds were interested, that was it for me,” Bogle said.
“I just think speaking to family and friends, I knew Leeds was a big club but I didn’t realise how big and how big the fanbase is and where this club belongs, which is in the Premier League.
“I’d seen the football they’d played over the years, and I just thought ‘yeah, this feels right’.”
Bogle continued: “The boys were flying out to Germany the day after I signed or something. Obviously, I knew Eth (Ethan Ampadu) already; straight away he made me feel comfortable.
“I got there; I think they were doing a gym session. Straight away, as soon as I walked over, he was like, ‘That’s a fine for being late’. It immediately made me feel comfortable.
“The team at the time was a fantastic squad. A young squad as well, which made it easier to fit straight in.”
Jayden Bogle continues to thrive at Leeds
Not just at Leeds, but when a new signing arrives at a club, we always hear the same spiel about how excited they are to be here.
But with Bogle, we know this is true. He easily could’ve stayed at Sheffield United. However, when Leeds United came knocking, it forced him to sit up and take notice.
Over the summer, Bogle also signed a new deal that will keep him at the Whites until 2030. This is just more evidence that he loves it here.
And I think I speak for all Leeds supporters when I say we love having him here too.
Especially since the move to the three at the back last season, the role Bogle operates in is so complex.
Despite being labelled a defender on paper, Bogle is frequently one of our most threatening attacking players, acting like a winger at times when we are on the ball.
Although he often marauds into the final third, he is rarely caught out as a result, and he is still a very capable defender.
The fact that he snubbed Sheffield United to join us before going on to become one of our best players only makes Bogle’s success story at Leeds that much sweeter.
