Leeds United’s draw against Manchester United over the weekend means we are still unbeaten against our biggest rivals in the three meetings we’ve had with them since our promotion.
We showed plenty of endeavour during the game but lacked that bit of quality in the final third at times.
Especially when considering the fact we went a goal down, the point we picked up is a positive one, I’d argue.
Steven Gerrard was very impressed with one particular Leeds player and his heroics in that game at Elland Road.
Steven Gerrard waxes lyrical about Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Overlap Daily
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser against Man United was his 20th goal for the club since arriving as a free agent in the summer of 2025.
The Englishman was the fastest player to reach this milestone whilst we’ve been a Premier League outfit since Mark Viduka. So Calvert-Lewin is certainly in excellent company.
Now, Gerrard has sung the praises of our target man on the Overlap Daily podcast after Calvert-Lewin netted his fifth goal of the season in all competitions.
“I’ve met him a couple of times, and he’s a great kid”, Gerrard began.
“The best thing for me is to see him playing, staying healthy and consistently completing games. If he’s fit and available, everyone knows the level of player you’re dealing with. He must be an absolute nightmare for centre-backs because he can do everything.
“He’s good on the floor with his hold-up play. He’s quick, he can run the shoulders and score with both feet and is so dangerous from set-pieces. His finish against (Man) United was terrific.
“I never had a doubt about the level of player he is. I saw him doing it a number of times for Everton and for England. It’s great to see him back scoring goals and enjoying his football again.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin on track for an even better season at Leeds this year
In his first season at United, Calvert-Lewin scored 15 goals in all competitions. (Sofascore)
We’re not even in November yet, and he’s already scored a third of his tally from last season in the new campaign.
To put his early-season form into perspective, at this stage last season, Calvert-Lewin had only scored once for Leeds.
So if he keeps this form up, he could smash his already impressive tally from last season in his second year in West Yorkshire.
This year, Calvert-Lewin’s had the benefit of a full pre-season with us, and it’s allowed him to come in and hit the ground running.
I can’t say I was as confident as Gerrard seemingly is in Calvert-Lewin’s abilities. I had my reservations when we initially signed him, and I think they were justified looking back when considering his injury record and poor form in the couple of seasons prior to joining Leeds.
But now, Calvert-Lewin looks like one of the best strikers in the entire Premier League.
At 29, he’s in the prime years of his career, and hopefully he continues to find the back of the net regularly for us moving forward.
