Leeds United were always going to come back and equalise against Man Utd, according to former Old Trafford star Ashley Young.
Leeds have to turn attention this week to an away trip to Sunderland in the Premier League. But, even with fans disappointed in a point against Man Utd, it cements what everyone is saying about us.
It’s another instance of Leeds being an incredibly tough side to play against, coming from a goal down to earn a draw at home.
Ashley Young: ‘Confident’ Leeds United were always going to come back v Man Utd
The change in approach from Michael Carrick did ask questions of Leeds in the first half. We went a goal down as Bryan Mbeumo turned in a cross from Youri Tielemans, but responded superbly in the second half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled from a corner to give Leeds deserved parity. After that, we can be annoyed that we didn’t go on and find a winning goal later in the second half.
Former Man Utd winger Ashley Young believes that the away side needed to find a second goal to win, knowing that United were inevitably going to produce a good response. He believes the “confidence” Daniel Farke’s side are playing was the difference.
“So, it was one of those things where they got themselves ahead in the game, and I’m there looking at it and thinking they need to score a second goal,” Young said on The Overlap Daily.
“They need to get another goal to go on and win that game. Because Leeds were definitely going to come out after half-time and say, ‘We’re going to get ourselves back in the game’, because of how they’ve started, the way they’re playing, the way that they’ve got confidence instead of Man United.”
Leeds United’s confidence should continue into more ‘winnable’ fixtures vs Sunderland, Bournemouth and Spurs
A point is by no means the end of the world. We’re on 10 from seven games, though, and getting into a real habit of not losing football matches.
If we can translate that into winning performances against sides that we should fancy ourselves against – including our next three – we could be in a superb position.
Sunderland up next have Europe on Thursday, Bournemouth are in EFL Cup action before they play us, and Spurs are Spurs. There’s no reason why we can’t be looking for wins in each of these games.
As Young says, there’s a real confidence to what Farke and Leeds are building. That should stand us in good stead.
