The signing of a midfielder is perhaps the most pressing issue for Leeds United and Jesse Marsch this month, with more targets emerging this week and Victor Orta exploring Europe for signings.

The final week and a bit of the window is going to be a busy one for Leeds both with incomings and outgoings expected at Elland Road.

A midfielder is likely to be the key signing Leeds make before the window shuts at the end of the month, with a host of names already being linked.

Victor Orta is likely to be scouring Europe in order to find the right player to add to Jesse Marsch’s side this month, and the Yorkshire Evening Post revealed that another ambitious enquiry was lodged for a mystery target.

“There have been other targets, one of whom they sought to bring in on loan until his club made clear only an eye-watering sum and a permanent deal were acceptable, and that interest will be left to lie until such a time as something changes. Should clubs elsewhere end up doing business and need to move on a Leeds target, they could make it a hat-trick of senior January additions.”

Who this player is has not been confirmed, but Alfredo Pedulla reported last week that Leeds were one of the sides that held interest in signing AS Roma’s wantaway star Nicolo Zaniolo, who has now been revealed by Fabrizio Romano to command a €35-40million asking price.

Such a price tag is unlikely to be attainable for Leeds after breaking their club-record to bring in Georginio Rutter, meaning a loan for the Italian would be the only viable solution.

Will Leeds sign a midfielder before the January deadline?

If Zaniolo is the man that Leeds have looked at here, then it’s no shock that we’ve had to turn our back on it for now.

The Italy international would have been a luxury signing for us anyway, so we’re not going to lose sleep over him being a player we can’t land.

A midfielder needs to be the priority right now, rather than another creative attacking player, because we’re already going to struggle fitting in all of our talented players.
