There is reportedly nothing imminent with regard to Kalvin Phillips signing a new deal with Leeds United.

Leeds are in the middle of the January transfer window, with supporters having a thirst for news of fresh additions to Marcelo Bielsa’s playing squad.

However, the club are working on other deals alongside that, including sorting out contracts for existing members of the team.

Phillips revealed last month in an interview with the Daily Mail how he was hoping to sign a new deal at Leeds, insisting that he was happy enough at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old is currently out injured with a hamstring problem and is not due to return for at least another six weeks.

Despite that, it appears that there’s been little progress on the new contract front, as the Yorkshire Evening Post note how nothing is imminent.

“Kalvin Phillips has put on record his desire for a new deal, an idea Leeds are very open to, but the YEP understands there is no imminent news on that front. He is also contracted until 2024, however, so there is no huge rush and the player is clearly happy at Leeds.”

Given there are still two-and-a-half years on Phillips’ deal, there’s no rush, but it is worth Leeds striking whilst the iron is hot.

Phillips wants to commit, so it makes sense for Leeds to get something acceptable drawn up in-front of him.

This isn’t a squad player we are talking about, it’s Marcelo Bielsa’s key cog, an England international and a fan favourite.

There’s no rush from a financial point of view, but by means of keeping everyone happy, Leeds need to get working on this.

Fingers crossed that it won’t take long to sort.
