With the news emerging that Leeds are on the verge of signing Ian Poveda from Manchester City, many will be wondering just who the 19 year old is? What position does he play? Is he any good?
Poveda is a winger capable of playing on both sides, he’s made a host of appearances for the England youth set up and has played at all levels for the Manchester City academy, including numerous appearances in the Check-A-Trade trophy, in which Premier League teams are allowed to submit youth sides to compete against teams from League One and Two.
Coming from the Manchester City academy, but before that Barcelona and Arsenal is an obvious sign of talent. Further, having played previously at Brentford and Bristol City, also noted for their recognition of ability and good recruitment in the recent years, we might just have a player on our hands. Though he’s not expected to make the step up to the first-team immediately, it’s clear that he’ll be included in Bielsa’s core group from the off. Should Harrison or Costa be injured or Leeds require an extra injection from the bench, Orta and Bielsa obviously see him as a player able to make the difference.
Footage of him scoring a brace for the England U20s, including one particularly good goal where he plays on both his right and left foot to work an angle can be seen below:
