Last week, it was announced that Will Buckley would be on his way to Leeds United from Sunderland on a loan deal until January, and at the time, the plan is to make his loan move a permanent deal.
Buckley went from Brighton to Sunderland in 2014. At Brighton, he was a third of an immense attacking three. Kazenga Lua Lua, Leonardo Ulloa, and Will Buckley. His time at Sunderland is probably best left forgotten – after a run of unimpressive games, and not earning a consistent place in the starting team, he was pretty much taking a back seat his whole time at Sunderland.
However, his time at Brighton couldn’t have been any more different. He was so good, in fact, that a number of Premier League clubs pressed for his signature, but nevertheless, the Championship is his level.
What should we expect from him? Well, that would depend on the period of time. Short term, not a hell of a lot, in my opinion… Mainly due to his time on the side lines at Sunderland & lack of match day practice. But, I think Uwe Rosler would’ve kept this in mind when asking for Cellino to bring him in, so, it’s not really a big worry – he’ll get there eventually.
Moving in to the long-term, I don’t see why we shouldn’t be expecting him to put the league up in flames. He’s an outstanding player, and the position in the team is there for the taking. We all know that the right-winger position has been an inconsistent part of the team for us, since the departure of Snodgrass, and let’s try not to mention Jimmy Kebe… However, right now, we’re settling with Sam Byram on the wing, and well, the nicest way to put it would be that Byram isn’t a winger. Botaka? Yeah, looks good, but does he have the ability to play all season? We’ll see. Enter Buckley…
He’s done it before, he’s been in a team that’s reached the play offs & he’s been in a team where he’s had to work hard to prove his ability to the coach and the team. I think the two experiences would not only benefit him, but the whole squad. It’s giving the push for every winger in the side to not just expect to play, thus making everyone else work harder.
As for reaching the play offs, I think we’re moving in the right direction. Arguable Premier League standard player in the selection (Buckley), on top of signings like Stuart Dallas and Chris Wood, we could be off to a flyer once a few of the lads hit form. Especially Mowatt, Cook and Bamba. Three players that we expect better from, and are yet to show their best… Season’s only a month old, and players will get bigger and stronger.
There’s little reason to be disappointed with the loan signing of Buckley. In fact, there’s every reason to be happy. Apart from the small theory that he could be brought in to keep Byram out… But any way, this isn’t about Byram; it’s about Buckley.
I personally expect a lot from Buckley, albeit some mistakes at the start. He’ll only get better, and so will the team. Hats off to Cellino for bringing him in.
Very much looking forward to the after Christmas period of the season, even though we’ll probably get trounced the whole month like every f*cking season.
