Leeds United cruised to a 3-0 win over Rotherham United on Saturday, keeping the pressure on the top two in the process and creating a three-point gap to Ipswich Town.

The Whites have started 2024 in irresistible form with six wins on the bounce in the Championship and progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup as well.

A home clash against Rotherham presented another chance for three points in a game that Leeds were fully expected to win.

Leeds 3-0 Rotherham: Bamford’s helping hand pushes Leeds to win

Rotherham started the game in fairness not like a side without a win away from home all season and rooted to the bottom of the table, but any possession they had didn’t lay a glove on Illan Meslier.

Leeds got their opener in controversial circumstances as Junior Firpo’s cut back was deflected off a Millers defender towards goal, seemingly brushing Patrick Bamford’s outstretched elbow on the way past an already beaten Viktor Johansson – a handball that was potentially confirmed by Bamford’s cheeky celebration pointing his elbow to the crowd.

The home side never looked back from this, creating chance after chance in both halves, and eventually getting the much-needed second after the interval when Georginio Rutter provided for Crysencio Summerville with a brilliant run and well-weighted pass, seeing the Dutchman race clear and roll in.

Summerville made it three from the penalty spot after being fouled himself, with a sublime Panenka in front of the Kop.

Joe Gelhardt reaction to Summerville’s penalty

Footage emerged post-match of the winger’s stylish penalty for 3-0 showing substitute Joe Gelhardt on the sideline watching on.

Gelhardt’s reaction to the penalty just about sums up the brilliance of the chip, as shared by @AKITB1972:

Summerville never looked like missing that penalty

It always looked like Leeds were going to tuck away that penalty, right from the moment that Bamford took the ball to take the pressure away from Summerville, right to his body language when stepping up.

That game was never going to be a slip-up from us, as much as it could have been seen in that way, after the away draw at Rotherham.

We’re plugging along really nicely at the moment, and while Southampton keep doing the business too, our form should see us very confident.
