There’s a decision to make in Leeds United’s goalkeeping department this summer.
Leeds have Illan Meslier as their first choice and that’s not expected to change.
However, there’s only Kristoffer Klaesson covering for the 22-year-old, leaving Jesse Marsch with two very young options.
Our writers Kris (FA5) and Alfie (N12) discuss whether or not it needs to be a priority of Leeds’ to sign cover for Meslier:
I wouldn’t particularly say that signing a goalkeeper to cover Meslier is make or break, but it would help a lot.
Meslier is going to start no matter who we end up signing, but having genuine competition to push him further, while helping him progress even in training, is something we ought to be looking at.
It seems harsh on Kristoffer Klaesson that we’re considering it, when he stepped up to the plate at the only time of asking, and without that display, we wouldn’t have won against Wolves.
There’s plenty of options out there that we should be looking at, but the issue is whether someone wants to play second fiddle to a younger ‘keeper.
I’d like us to sign one, but not if it takes precedent over more pressing matters, like adding a new striker, or ensuring we’re well covered for when Phillips and Raphinha eventually leave.
Leeds United quiz: Are these 15 Illan Meslier facts true or false?
It’s not so much of a priority because of Meslier and how good he is, yet if Leeds don’t recruit this summer they do leave themselves at risk of a disaster.
Klaesson did really well in the win over Wolves, but it’s such a small sample size to judge whether or not he’s good enough to cover for Meslier in the event of suspension or injury.
Leeds could really do with a more experienced option kicking around their squad to just offer Marsch an option in case either of those scenarios play out.
It would also help both Meslier and Klaesson with their development if there was a senior professional through the door, conducting himself well in and around Thorp Arch.
You look at the business Leeds are doing this summer and you can see that they are looking to lift the pressure of a small squad Marcelo Bielsa left behind.
The sensible thing to do would be recruiting a senior goalkeeper.
