Just how healthy is the squad? How is the depth? The versatility? Let’s take a look…

In part one of this series we look at the current goalkeeper situation at Elland Road.

Goalkeepers: Illan Meslier, Joel Robles, Kristoffer Klaesson, Dani van den Heuvel

Kiko Casilla has finally left the club, and for many, he remained a darkened cloud hanging over them even when out on loan. His exit was confirmed this summer with a year left on his deal but the club and player decided to mutually cancel his contract allowing him to move to Getafe.

However, once this was finalised, and with Elia Caprile leaving in a move to Bari, The Whites were left with only three first-team goalkeepers at the club: Meslier, Klaesson, and van den Heuvel.

Signing experienced cover was imperative, as it was lacking last season during Meslier’s below par spells. With Joel Robles joining the club on a free transfer, they have got their wish.

Which team did Robles just leave in the summer?

The Spaniard signed a one-year-contract, and will help in pushing Klaesson for the number two spot on the bench. The Norwegian, at 21, could really benefit from a loan, but that could leave the club short in their youth set up with van den Heuvel injuring his neck in a car accident.

An experienced back up was important to aid the young number one, Illan Meslier, in his development. It may also allow Klaesson or van den Heuvel a valuable loan in January, once the Dutchman has returned from injury, to gain much needed first team minutes.

In conclusion: Good. Leeds appear to have upgraded in the goalkeeper department, and should consider what is best for their under 21 side in January in allowing one of the supporting cast out on loan.

Can you see Meslier leaving Leeds any time soon?
