The end of David Hockaday – who next for Cellino and Leeds?

With David Hockaday sacked from his position as Leeds United’s head-coach last week, we look at who could be next in line to work under Massimo Cellino.

Neil Redfearn
Neil Redfearn was placed in temporary charge and what better way to start than with a win and a clean sheet at Elland Road. This is the third time Redfearn has been placed in this role but I don’t think he’d take the job full time. He’s got his current role with the club’s youth academy and he’s certainly building something special there. He drafted in Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt for the Bolton game, the former gaining many plaudits. I do believe if we’re going to appoint someone other than Redfearn, it needs to be done before the Birmingham game in two weeks. Here are some other candidates who I think would be interested in the job.

Steve Clarke

A coach with a very impressive CV. Clarke has coached for some of the most prestigious managers in football – including Jose Mourinho, Ruud Gullit and Kenny Dalglish. Clarke was named head-coach at West Brom back in June 2012, in his first season they finished in an impressive 9th place. His second season wasn’t so great, he was sacked – undeservedly in my opinion – in December 2013 with the club in 16th place. For me he would be the perfect coach to take over at Elland Road. If rumours are true that he has been in talks with Massimo Cellino then I will get a little over-excited.

Rolando Maran

Maran is the bookies favourite, most probably because he’s Italian. The majority of his coaching career has been at Serie B level, although his most recent job was with Catania. He had two spells with the club – in his first, a bit like Steve Clarke, he guided the Italian side to an 8th placed finish where they broke their record for most points accrued in a single season. The following season he was sacked and then re-hired before being sacked again. Catania were relegated from Serie A as a result. I don’t think Maran will take over, personally, and would be disappointed if it happened.

Oscar Garcia

Another that I don’t think will get the job, but I’d be happy if he did take over at Elland Road. He recently took over at Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv but resigned after just two months due to the ongoing Gaza war. He has Championship experience, leading Brighton to a sixth placed finish. They lost in the play-off semi-final to Derby County, and Garcia’s resignation offer was accepted by the board. In 53 games at Brighton, Garcia had a 39.62 winning percentage (21). The football he had them playing was impressive, and I’d happily give him a chance to take Leeds to the Premiership.

Gary McAllister

A hero among the Elland Road faithful. McAllister was one of the three candidates interviewed by Cellino when Hockaday was given the job. At 50/1 I had £5 on Gaz, and almost cried when he wasn’t given the job. This time around there is no such betting, but I would still like to see him given another shot at the head-coach vacancy. When he was here before he had us playing attractive football, something that I really want to see back at Elland Road. Not the favourite this time around but it wouldn’t be the worst appointment.

Tony Pulis
Stoke City manager Tony Pulis
It was a slight shock seeing Pulis depart from Crystal Palace on the eve of the new season, especially after their impressive second half to last season. A proven manager at the top two levels of English football, he would be a decent appointment, but he’s probably too outspoken for Cellino’s liking. He also tends to have his team playing a long ball style – something I don’t think the players are capable of doing, and something the fans don’t really want to spend their hard earned money watching.
