Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier could be an option for Manchester United to replace David de Gea with this summer.

Leeds are struggling at the bottom end of the table, and with that, criticism has been thrown the way of Illan Meslier after previously impressing for the Whites in the Premier League.

Despite this, the French goalkeeper being 23 means he has plenty of years ahead of him to become an elite ‘keeper, which some of his performances suggest he can.

Could Meslier leave Leeds?

Plenty of clubs have been linked with the Leeds stopper since promotion to the Premier League, with three top-flight sides cited with interest.

One of those most prominent links is that of Manchester United (per The Athletic), who are having to persist with David de Gea for the time being despite woeful mistakes on the ball recently – seeing them knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Meslier to Man United?

The Red Devils’ ongoing troubles with their number one slot are likely to see them need a long-term replacement to the struggling Spaniard this summer.

Stan Collymore believes that Meslier could be that man, despite his struggles this season, as he wrote on CaughtOffside:

“Obviously the likes of Meslier has had a very, very difficult season at Leeds but he’s still a baby. Would he be someone they’d look to develop?”

Meslier should still be someone that the elite clubs look to as a long-term investment, because there’s no denying there’s a talented ‘keeper there.

Having said that, I would be cashing in for anything from £30million upwards.

We can’t keep relying on players purely because they hold potential for the future, and cashing in would see us able to replace him for cheaper while redistributing the rest of the funds.

Elite-level coaching would help bring Meslier to the a much better standard, but we can’t get him there.
