It seems Leeds United were interested in signing Nantes striker Moses Simon in the January transfer window.

That’s after the player himself revealed that the Elland Road club made a strong offer to sign him last month.

In the end, Leeds did not make a single first-team signing during last month’s market, despite their precarious position in the Premier League.

Indeed, there were areas in the side the club could have benefited from strengthening, not least at centre forward, where Patrick Bamford’s injuries have made him a big miss this season.

Reports did however, link Leeds with a move for Simon, and it seems that the Yorkshire outfit were indeed keen on a deal to sign the 26-year-old.

Speaking about those links with Leeds, Simon told CKD Media in his native Nigeria: “Yes, it is true, my agent told me about some offers among all is Leeds United who came calling with a strong offer and well intention of sealing the deal immediately.

“My club want me to finish the season with FC Nantes and I really want to contribute my own quota to ensure we secure a Europa League ticket at the end of the season, we are pushing hard for that.”

Since joining Nantes in 2019, Simon has scored 17 goals in 85 games in all competitions for the Ligue 1 club.

There are currently two-and-a-half years remaining on Simon’s contract with Nantes, securing his future in France until the end of the 2023/24.

This could well be one to keep an eye on as we approach the summer window.

It seems clear from Leeds’ struggles in Bamford’s absence this season, that they cannot continue without back-up in attack in the long-term.

Judging by these claims from Simon of a bid for him, that is something the club are keen to rectify, and the 26-year-old now looks an obvious target.

Considering what he has said here, it also seems Simon himself could be open to a move at some point, and Leeds may need to take advantage of that soon, before another club beat them to it.
