Leeds United’s Darko Gyabi has underlined the importance of the welcome he got from the senior players at the club after making his move from Manchester City.

The loss of Kalvin Phillips in the summer was a blow that Leeds moved very quickly to rectify in the short and long-term.

His exit coincided with the £5million agreement to bring Darko Gyabi the other way, a midfielder who sealed the PL2 title with the Citizens last season at Elland Road.

Gyabi has since had to wait to make his competitive debut for Leeds, but did well in that narrow EFL Cup defeat to Wolves.

He’s a player earmarked for an important future role at Leeds, but is currently still in a period of development in between the youth and senior sides, learning the ropes from Jesse Marsch’s more experienced players.

The likes of Marc Roca, Tyler Adams, and Mateusz Klich have been crucial for Gyabi settling in well at Leeds and aiding him becoming a player ready for regular Premier League action.

Speaking to LeedsLive, Gyabi detailed how these midfielders have helped him bed into the squad:

“Not just Tyler, but Marc, Klichy, all the midfielders.

“Learning, just learning the little details like where their positioning is when we don’t have the ball and when we do have the ball the spaces they’re picking up to receive.

“Like checking their shoulders, scanning, trying to receive and turn and play forwards. That stuff and trying to take it all in.”

The teenager also commented on the great welcome he had at Thorp Arch, as he continued:

“So crazy it was so welcoming.

“When I first came I wasn’t really expecting it because they’re all first-team established, but they were so welcoming showing me around the training ground.”

Will Klich leave in January?

The club wouldn’t have spent such a fee on Gyabi if they didn’t think he was destined to be a first-team player quite soon.

He’s been far too good already to be playing PL2 Division 2 football, and I’d expect him to start making more of an impression at senior level in 2023.

Gyabi is definitely good enough to slot into our side, but it’s actually a blessing that we have a competitive squad there, so we don’t have to rush him.
