Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy has admitted that Leeds United deserve to be promoted to the Premier League this season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have enjoyed a hugely impressive campaign this season, and currently sit top of the Championship table, seven points clear of third-placed Fulham in the race for automatic promotion, with nine games of the season still to be played at some point.

However, the suspension of the season, and uncertainty about its potential resumption, means it remains to be seen whether Leeds will be able to secure that promotion, or even be handed a place in the Premier League should those final matches be cancelled.

Pelupessy however, believes that a return to the top-flight next season is the least the Whites deserve for their efforts and success across the course of the campaign so far.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post about the issue of promotion and relegation this season, the Wednesday midfielder said: “It’s hard to say what should happen but Leeds and West Brom deserve it because they’ve spent almost the whole season in those (automatic promotion) places.

“The play-off places are really hard too because the teams from third to sixth deserve a chance (to win promotion) and everyone knows how important it is to get into the Premier League.”

With several clubs at the wrong end of the Premier League making clear their opposition to relegation in the current unusual circumstances, Pelupessy also believes that an expanded top-flight could be a possible solution, as he continued: “Promotion is very important and maybe having 22 (Premier League) teams is fairer but if you have promotion normally you have to have relegation.”

“It’s really hard to decide what’s fair but you have to make it clear and do everything or nothing.

“I’m just happy I don’t have to make that decision because not everyone is going to be happy.”

In contrast to Leeds, Pelupessy and Wednesday have endured a difficult few months of late, with a run of just two wins from their last 14 league games seeing them drop from third to 15th in the Championship table.
