Leeds United signed Stuart McKinstry from Motherwell in 2019, but have subsequently loaned him back to the club during the recent summer transfer window.

McKinstry has made two senior appearances for The Whites, both coming last season. He made his debut off the bench against Fulham in the Carabao Cup and played three minutes away to Tottenham Hotspur, also from the bench, on his league debut.

A boyhood Motherwell fan, McKinstry will be hoping to play more first-team football, and Leeds will be hoping the loan helps to develop him further than he has for the Under-21 side so far. Senior football should benefit the 20-year-old.

His contract ends in 2023, though, thus casting his future at Elland Road into doubt.

What’s the latest?

McKinstry has scored his first two senior goals while registering an assist in eleven league appearances so far. His performances have alerted other interested parties to him.

He has been linked with moves to Championship sides Sheffield United (Scottish Sun), and Burnley (Football Insider).

However, the report from Scotland also claims his parent club, Leeds, are looking to tie the player down to a new contract beyond the summer, in order to avoid losing him for nothing, and fend off those sides interested in him.

Are Leeds likely to sell?

Should the Whites agree a new deal, one would imagine they will have greater plans for McKinstry.

It is likely that they will then either make a pathway to the first-team for McKinstry, or loan him out once again for more senior first-team minutes, which could increase his transfer value.

It is unclear, though, as Leeds could increase his contract simply to protect their asset before selling down the line. A move to Burnley or Sheffield United should therefore not be ruled out at some point down the line.

For now, Leeds will hope McKinstry continues to improve with Motherwell and possibly add to his resale value.
