Leeds United have entered contract discussions with Jack Harrison over extending his new deal, with Newcastle United lurking.

Newcastle reportedly made multiple bids for the winger over the summer, the last of which was worth in excess of £20million according to a report from David Ornstein in The Athletic.

Leeds signed the winger last summer on a permanent basis from Manchester City. He had spent three seasons on loan with the club before making the deal a permanent one for a fee of around £11million.

Harrison, 25, has been in fantastic form for Leeds this season, with three assists and a goal already to his name. However, he is into the final two years of his contract at Elland Road, and Leeds are keen to tie him down to a new deal in order to protect their asset and ward off potential interested parties such as the Magpies.

Graeme Bailey, writing in 90min, is reporting that Newcastle are monitoring Harrison’s situation at Leeds closely. He said: “Leeds’ Jack Harrison remains a target having bid for him over the summer, and they [Newcastle] will be keeping a close eye on his ongoing contract talks at Elland Road.”

Leeds will be feeling the heat on a player into his final 24 months, and it is possible that the winger could be tempted with a new challenge, having been at the club for over four seasons now.

Bailey added that Newcastle have other options on their list, including Leicester’s James Maddison, as they look to add some much needed creativity in the final third to their team.

Harrison may no longer be first choice, though, as they are keeping close tabs on two younger wingers on the continent as well, he said: “Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby is another player who they have admired in the long-term, while they have also taken a keen interest in the progress of Shakthar Donetsk’s Mykhaylo Mudryk.”

Now the window has shut, it is imperative Leeds tie all of their major assets down onto new contracts.

The likes of Harrison, Pascal Struijk, and Robin Koch are all in their early-mid 20s with potential resale value and profitability, but only if they are retained beyond the two years they all have remaining.

Given the form of the winger, it is no great surprise Newcastle are keen on him. However, he may not be the first choice target on their list, Mudryk and Diaby are 21 and 23 respectively. They may be seen as young prospects who could grow and improve with the club over time, as opposed to Harrison who turns 26 in October and should now be hitting his peak years as a player.

His high energy is vital to the way the Whites counter-press and his delivery grows more consistent with each season at the club. He must be kept at all costs. LeedsAllOver sources are led to believe he was valued by the club in excess of £35million this summer, but this will only diminish as his contract runs down.
