Leeds United’s second bid for Brenden Aaronson looks unlikely to shift Red Bull Salzburg’s stance on a sale, but talks are expected to rumble on.

After a bright start to 2022 with two consecutive league wins, Leeds came back down to Earth with a defeat at home to Newcastle United.

With that, came a big inquest from fans around the club’s transfer activity (or lack thereof) this month, given the lack of numbers.

Leeds have stepped up their work to bring in a midfielder with an offer for Brenden Aaronson, first standing at £15million – which was swiftly rebuffed.

Leeds have since bumped that up to £20million, however Red Bull Salzburg’s Champions League standing means they’re unwilling to part with a star player, justifiably so.

Now, it has been revealed that in spite of the fact that Leeds’ improved offer is expected to also be rejected, talks are still taking place.

The Mail on Sunday are reporting that “further talks are due” for the USMNT star, but also that the Austrian side are eager to keep hold of Aaronson until the summer.

Their Champions League round of 16 clash against Bayern Munich next month is the first time they have reached the knockout stages of the competition.

I’m not totally convinced we’ll be able to sign him this month, but I do think we have a chance if they’re allowing Victor Orta to travel for talks.

A simple ‘no, wait until the summer’ would have sufficed via a phone call if they weren’t willing to sell.

I’m just concerned we’re going to be made to pay through the nose to get this deal done.

It’s the sort of pitfall we knew was present in January, but if you want the right player midway through a season, you’re bound to pay a premium.
