Leeds United duo Joe Gelhardt and Cody Drameh could be set to make history if either clinch promotion from the Championship, also potentially being relegated in the same season.

Leeds’ season in the Premier League went from bad to worse on Monday when their defeat to Manchester City was compounded by wins for Everton and Nottingham Forest, dropping the side to 19th.

It leaves Leeds two points adrift with three games to play, leaving Sam Allardyce’s side staring at relegation back to the Championship.

How are the loanees getting on?

Monday also brought a conclusion to the Championship season where Charlie Cresswell, Tyler Roberts, and Leo Hjelde all saw their seasons come to an end with their respective clubs.

For Cresswell and Millwall, it was heartbreak as they blew a 3-1 lead to lose at home to Blackburn Rovers, meaning they were leapfrogged into the top six by Sunderland – spearheaded in attack by Joe Gelhardt.

It means Gelhardt joins Cody Drameh in the playoffs as the Black Cats prepare to face the Luton Town in the semi-final this weekend, with Drameh aiming to continue his fine form for the Hatters.

History in the making?

With Drameh facing Gelhardt in the play-off semi-final, one of them is going to be making the trip to Wembley with a shot at achieving promotion to the Premier League.

As pointed out by Sport Bible, this would give either a chance at making some interesting history, becoming the first player to be promoted to the Premier League, and relegated in the same season, having played a part in both.

If Drameh or Gelhardt help their side to promotion in the play-off final, they could see their parent club drop out of the top flight after featuring for them this season, while their loan club replaces them.

The irony is that Gelhardt and Drameh could, and should have had more of an impact than they have done in our season.

Both players would have improved our depth in the positions they play in, and perhaps there needs to be a consideration about both of those playing next season.

Drameh wouldn’t be a shock to see leave after being treated poorly, but Gelhardt needs to be key next term for us if we do go down.
