It’s been reported that Leeds United will miss out on the signing of Hartlepool youngster Josh Hawkes, who will be unveiled as a Sunderland player on Monday.

Leeds have laid a heavy focus on recruiting youngsters this summer, with 21-year-old Hawkes seemingly on the radar.

However, there’s reports emerging that Sunderland will get the deal done for him.

So far this summer, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and Cody Drameh have headlined the young arrivals at Elland Road.

Reports from TEAMtalk have confirmed that Hawkes was another player on the Leeds radar.

Since debuting in 2017, the 21-year-old has scored 13 goals in 64 appearances for Hartlepool. However, the bulk of those appearances have come in the National League.

Now, TEAMtalk are reporting that the midfielder is set for a move into the EFL with Sunderland.

It’s also stated that there has been interest from Elland Road, whilst Premier League rivals, Newcastle United, were also keen.

Middlesbrough were the third north-east club interested.

It’s always nice to see Leeds adding young players of this ilk, with Hawkes really highly thought of coming out of Hartlepool.

We’ve been spoilt with the likes of Greenwood, Gelhardt and Drameh, but you can’t win them all.

For what it’s worth, we’ve got a fair amount of midfield talent: Alfie McCalmont, Robbie Gotts, Pascal Struijk, so maybe this wasn’t a deal that needed to be done.

Good luck to Hawkes at Sunderland.
