Leeds United will not be offering a new contract to left-back Barry Douglas at the end of the current season.

That’s according to a report from Football Insider, who say that the club have already made a decision on the 31-year-old’s future beyond this summer.

Douglas joined Leeds from Wolves back in the summer of 2019, after helping the Midlands club charge to the Championship title the season before.

But having fallen down the pecking order as Marcelo Bielsa’s side claimed the Championship title for themselves last season, Douglas was sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers during last summer’s transfer window.

Since then, Douglas has made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Championship club, but despite some impressive performances for Rovers, it seems Leeds have now come to a decision on the future of the defender.

According to this latest report, Leeds will not be offering a new contract to Douglas when his current deal at Elland Road expires this summer, meaning the Scot is now set to become a free agent.

During his time with Leeds, Douglas made a total of 45 appearances in all competitions for the Whites, although he never scored for the club.

I do think this is probably the right decision for Leeds to make with regards to the future of Douglas.

It seems as though Leeds will be looking to add to their options at left-back in the summer transfer window, and given he had fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road, it is hard to see Douglas really being able to add to that role for Leeds.

At 31-years-old, it does seem as though Douglas is starting to approach the latter stages of his career, meaning a move elsewhere could suit him as well, giving him the opportunity to enjoy some more regular football while he can.

Indeed, having been a solid addition to Tony Mowbray’s side at Ewood Park this season, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Blackburn were to try and make his loan move permanent come the end of the season.
