Leeds United may be running into competition as they push to conclude a deal for Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul, with a Serie A side reportedly keen on signing him.
After sealing big deals for Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch earlier in the transfer window, Marcelo Bielsa is building a squad looking to compete in the Premier League away from the relegation zone.
Leeds’ introduction to the top flight was as hard as they come, when they faced off with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield, but they gave an incredible account for themselves in a gripping 4-3 defeat, not conceding from open play against the champions.
The game also saw debuts for Koch and Rodrigo, both of whom might want to forget about the result after being on the wrong end of a penalty decision each.
Leeds are now setting their sights on another big-money signing as the deadline draws nearer.
Leeds’ interest in Udinese star Rodrigo De Paul is serious and the club are pushing hard to conclude a deal this window as European giants begin to circle.
The Argentine international looks set to leave I Bianconeri this window after being the main reason they have retained their Serie A status for the past few seasons and Elland Road continues to look like his most likely destination.
A manic Monday night saw De Paul reply to a tweet indicating he wants to move to Leeds, before his account was deactivated after the Whites fans were sent into a frenzy, but now reports are claiming Leeds might have some competition in Italy for his signature.
A report from Tele Radio Stereo (via TuttoMercatoWeb) claims that Italian giants AS Roma have been in contact with De Paul’s agent over a potential move to the Stadio Olimpico.
Leeds clearly remains De Paul’s favoured destination after his less-than-subtle hint on Twitter, to which the report reaffirms his eagerness to play in the Premier League for Leeds.
At present, Leeds and Udinese are still negotiating a fee, with the selling club looking to bring in €40million for him.
There have been a number of clubs taking a look at De Paul and it’s no shock, really, given how he has carried Udinese these past few seasons.
Roma is another team where you could easily see De Paul fitting in and getting a fair amount of game time in the league, but the lure of the Premier League and Marcelo Bielsa might just be enough for Leeds to tie up this deal.
With Leeds the only club to really register any sort of offer to the Italian side, De Paul might have his heart and head set on moving to West Yorkshire this window and his social media exploits only strengthen that idea.
€40million might seem a touch steep for a club looking to consolidate Premier League status this season but the quality that De Paul would bring could transform Leeds’ prospects in the league this season.
