With the news coming in the New York Times, that the San Francisco 49ers are expected to increase their steak in Leeds United in the coming weeks as a consequence of Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League, 49ers owner Paraag Marathe also spoke on his relation with Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Marathe revealed that he and Radrizzani enjoy a close business relationship, often speaking about the world of sports business and their respective processes. Marathe revealed that he travels to Leeds around once every six weeks, but he’ll talk over the phone to Radrizzani much more often than that.

In the same interview, Marathe also spoke about Radrizzani’s strategy for Leeds in the Premier League. The New York Times article wrote:

Marathe pointed to Sheffield United’s debut season as an example of an approach Leeds might be looking to follow.

“You don’t want to just rush and go high — ‘Every player out now; we’re a Premier League club’ — and buy this and this and this player,” Marathe said. “Sometimes you want to build it organically and thoughtfully.”

This infers that Leeds fans should not expect heavy spending and a new team for the Premier League, and who would want it? This has shown itself to be not the sure-fire strategy that people often make it out to be.

This is likely to please Marcelo Bielsa, too. Having a firm squad of players who are used to his system and approach to the game will be far more to his favour than new players who may be initially reluctant. This is likely to be compunded by the expected shorter pre-season schedule meaning there would be less time to blood in new talent.
