Former Leeds United defender Alex Bruce has claimed that left-back Barry Douglas could reject the opportunity to leave the club at the end of the season.

Douglas joined Leeds back in the summer of 2018 after helping Wolves charge to the Championship title the year before, but has struggled to make the same impact at Elland Road.

The one-time Scotland international has only started four league games this season, and featured on just 40 occasions in total over the course of his time at Elland Road.

As a result, it has recently been reported that Leeds will look to sell Douglas at when the transfer window reopens, although Bruce believes Douglas himself may look to avoid a departure from the club.

Speaking to Football Insider about Douglas’ future at Elland Road, Bruce said:  “He might want to see his contract out, come back and try to make an impression in pre-season because sometimes that can happen.

“You can have limited game time, come back to pre-season, really have a good pre-season, play well, catch the manager’s eye and the next minute you’re in his thought process. Seasons change from year to year.

“It’s a difficult one. It’s one of those where I could see him leaving, yes, to go and get game time but if he doesn’t then it’s up to the lad to try and make an impression and try to claim his place.”

There is currently just over a year remaining on Douglas’ contract with Leeds, securing his future at Elland Road until the end of next season.

Douglas remaining with Leeds could present something of a selection headache for Marcelo Bielsa in the left-back position.

Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski are both seemingly ahead of Douglas in the pecking order in that area of the pitch at Leeds, with the club apparently keen to add another – Elche’s Juan-Cruz Alvaro Armada – at the end of the season, meaning Bielsa could have four players to choose from in that position if Douglas does stay at Elland Road beyond this season.
