Leeds United director of football Victor Orta would find it hard to turn down the chance to take on a similar role at Newcastle United.
That’s according to former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who believes the Spaniard could be a good appointment for the Magpies as well.
With Newcastle recently being taken over by the Saudi Arabian backed Public Investment Fund, the club are now considered to be the richest on the planet.
Following that takeover, it has been reported that Newcastle have considered Orta as a candidate to be the club’s new director of football, as those new owners look to make their mark at St James’ Park.
Orta has filled a similar role at Leeds since May 2017, helping play a pivotal role in the Elland Road club’s return to the Premier League in recent years.
Now it seems that Robinson believes, that Orta could be tempted to make a move to the north east, due to the opportunities he could enjoy with the Magpies.
Giving his verdict on Orta’s link with Newcastle, the former England international told Football Insider: “Orta is proven. He is proven in his recruitment at both Championship and Premier League level.
“Victor is very highly regarded. He has done a good job at Leeds. It would be a good challenge for him, going to Newcastle. The job at Newcastle has many stages. Right now, it’s about trying to keep them in the Premier League.
“They need players who can get them out of that situation. They need to sign very wisely in January.
“From Orta’s point of view, to have that level of money as a sporting director would be very tempting. It would be an attraction for anybody.”
Worryingly for Leeds, it does feel hard to argue with Robinson here.
Orta clearly seems to be a director of football who is in his element when it comes to the transfer market, and enjoys the business of getting signings done.
As a result, the chance to do that with the sort of funds available to sign players that he would have at Newcastle, could certainly make a move to St James’ appealing for Orta.
Given the influence he has at Leeds behind the scenes, it would surely be a big blow for them to lose him, so you feel they will have to do all they can to try and keep him at the club, should Newcastle – or anyone else – come calling.
