Potential replacements for Marco Silvestri

With reports that there’s interest from England and Italy in Silvestri and that he may well leave, we have some possible replacements for him here.

1) Alex McCarthy –
Currently the third choice at Crystal Palace (I’m not sure how). He is a top quality keeper, we’ve seen that first hand ourselves, he’s the complete package, not just a shot-stopper like Silvestri, he commands his area extremely well and has no problem coming for crosses.

2) Dan Bentley – You’ve probably seen this name a lot recently, he’s about to become a free agent but he will have a queue of teams wanting him, he almost went to QPR in January but I’m sure there will be a lot more interest now. He reminds me of Joe Hart, he’s got a lot of similarities, don’t forget Joe Hart played in League 2 earlier in his career too, although Bentley is now in league one.

3) Julian Speroni – We go back to Palace for this keeper, Speroni is getting on a bit at 37-years-old but I think he could give us 2 top years which is probably what we need to go up, I’d prefer going the young route like McCarthy or Bentley but this would be a very solid choice. He lost his place to Wayne Hennessey this season.

4) Anders Lindegaard –
the last option is former Man United keeper Lindegaard, he’s never really settled at a club and is currently at WBA, although he spent part of last season on-loan at PNE. I have personally rated him throughout his career in England but obviously he hasn’t played a massive amount to have a full opinion. At 32 he’ll want to start as it’s prime age for a keeper really, however we may only be able to get him on a season-long loan. Considering this is Leeds we’re talking about, he may actually be the most likely option because we wouldn’t have to pay for him.

Let us know out of these who you would want to replace Silvestri, or any other names you think would do a better job. Thanks for reading!

Until there is some official word on Silvestri, this remains wild speculation.

That’s kind of the point… We should be looking to improve on Silvestri anyway.

Personally, I don’t want to see Marco Silvestri leave … I’d prefer to see the club sign two top quality CBs who know how to protect their GK. Silvestri has been exposed far too many times by poor defending and by all the CBs currently at the club … many seem to forget the number of times Silvestri has prevented routs.

Anybody who can actually catch the ball, will be a huge improvement on Silvestri and if he is allowed to stay at Leeds, as first choice goalkeeper for next season, then I will expect the same weekly mistakes and frailties in the Leeds penalty area, which have held back the football club from climbing the table. Silvestri may be a good shot-stopper, but anybody of any age, who are playing in a kick-about, can be a good shot-stopper and parry the ball, but being a reliable professional goalkeeper is all about dominating the penalty area and making a minimum of mistakes during the season and not making a costly mistake in nearly every game that you play in, like Silvestri does. Two new central defenders are desperately needed, but so is a new goalkeeper or expect another sacked Coach and another struggling, wasted season again, full of draws, if those crucial signings don’t happen.

  • Kevin Russell says:

Ian Lawlor of Man City is on the last year of a contract. He went on loan to Bury from Feb of this year. His agent is involved in Leeds. He’s currently the Ireland Under 21 keeper. He could be worth a punt.

  • Quinney says:

Theres no doubting his ability to top shots but it would be nice to have any goalkeeper that could catch crosses and kick! Surely not too much to ask?!?
