Leeds United 1 – 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Heading into a Yorkshire derby against a team with 0 points can be a game that you just can’t take for granted, as it proved to show yesterday at Elland Road. An early kick off and on sky resulted in a disappointing crowd at Elland Road. Before the game the fans showed their clear delight at Chris Kirkland and Dave Jones returning to Elland Road!

The first half was very flat from a Leeds perspective with Dom Poleon only really showing a threat and his pace caused the Wednesday defence problems, and Poleon can count himself unlucky not to have won a penalty and numerous free kicks as yet again Roger East decided he was going to be centre of attention and go on to make numerous questionable and laughable referring decisions. Leeds however went 1-0 down for the third successive game at Elland Road as Kamil Zayatte took advantage of some lack lustre defending to get up and head Wednesday into a half time lead.

At half time Brain McDermott shuffled his side by replacing Paul Green with Michael Tonge, Green who looked so impressive against Brighton has struggled since moving out of hat defensive role which Rudy Austin has now taken. One thing I can never criticise is Green’s work ethic and how he works for the team, but I just personally think he struggles in a more advanced role and doesn’t posses the quality to unlock a defence and create chances for the attacking places, he’s certainly no Irish Xavi which Trappatoni famously claimed!

The second half started slowly and the first chance of the half fell to Luke Murphy who fired over from the edge of the area. On the 58th minute Ross McCormack scored a brilliant individual goal as he collected the ball and pushed it past Zayatte and to collect the ball and finish well past Kirkland.

It did feel like Leeds would go onto win the game but neither side really created any decent chances, a couple of blocked efforts from Tonge and McCormack effectively were probably the best chances Leeds had to knick it whilst Michail Antonio also had a chance which was well saved by Paddy Kenny.

Dom Poleon – showed climpses of quality and used his pace to great effect, still not convinced he is ready to be starting games and at the minute is probably better coming off the bench and being used as an impact sub.

Ross McCormack – great goal and showed moments of class with some great runs and great touches, getting better in that position and more used to the formation.

Lee Peltier – Looked decent yesterday, won a lot in the air and pushed forward more, only caught out positionally a couple of times which is a massive improvement, one of his better games in a Leeds shirt.

Rodolph Austin – Playing like a captain and leading by example, some great bursts back and important tackles, he is going to be a big player for us.

Michael Tonge – I would like to know people’s opinions on Tonge, I think he’s looked a different player since Warnock left, he can play football when he’s in the right system and I think this system suits him, I’d be more inclined to be starting him with Murphy and Austin.
