Phil Hay feels Leeds United need to pull in every penny for Raphinha if he leaves the club, similarly to what Aston Villa did with Jack Grealish.
Leeds have struggled at the start of the Premier League season, but Raphinha hasn’t and has been clear as their most influential player in the opening 10 games.
There’s a feeling at Leeds that it’s going to be tough to retain Raphinha long-term, with speculation already growing.
Over on The Phil Hay Show podcast, The Athletic journalist has been discussing the scenario where Leeds cash-in on Raphinha.
Hay states that if the time comes that Leeds need to sell, they need to ‘eke out every single penny’ from the buying club. He offers up the comparison of Jack Grealish, who cost Manchester City £100m to get out of Aston Villa in the summer.
“More and more, I think to myself what Leeds have to do in managing and handling him to make sure if the day comes where they feel compelled to sell, they do it on their terms and they maximise his value.
“They really should – they should really eke out every single penny. Every club should for a player like that and they should also 100 per cent know what they’re going to do with the cash when it lands.
“That needs to go on in the background, as it should with any player, in the same way Aston Villa did with Jack Grealish. You have to think like that.”
Raphinha, 24, has scored four goals for Leeds in the opening 10 games of the Premier League season, keeping Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s head above water in terms of the relegation zone.
TEAMtalk have linked Raphinha with a move to PSG.
As nice as it would be to sit here and say Raphinha is going nowhere and will finish his career at Leeds, it’s not realistic.
If we are honest, he’s levels above where Leeds are right now and probably where they can go in the next two or three years.
Raphinha is a Champions League player and will be at that level before long, a lot like Grealish.
What Aston Villa did well was take Manchester City for every penny they could when it came to Grealish, which now sets the example for clubs like Leeds.
When the time comes for Raphinha to leave Elland Road – and it will come – Leeds have to make sure it’s for a fee too big to argue with.
