Leeds United were let down against Brentford by a combination of individual errors and a poor refereeing performance as they were soundly beaten 5-2 by Brentford.

Not at their best and one to forget for Jesse Marsch’s side. The positives were few and far between, but Marc Roca got off the mark with his first goal for the club, Luis Sinisterra continued his good form with three goals in three starts, and star striker Patrick Bamford picked up further minutes on his return from injury.

Bamford spoke to the press post-match for LUTV. Here’s what he had to say…

Leeds pulled the game back to 3-2 when Roca scored from close range, but then proceeded to concede straight away at the other end. Bamford left feeling frustrated at this, he said:

“You always say each game is a learning curve, but we can’t do what we did in getting back in the game, and then throw it away within seconds.”

He added the need for leadership to grow within the group of younger players, he said:

“It’s naive from us. We have a young team but we’ve got to learn quickly because you can’t get away with that. You don’t become that [a leader] until you learn.”

Despite Marsch’s frustrations being mostly aimed at the refereeing display, Bamford didn’t agree as he primarily blamed the individual errors of players for allowing Brentford to run away with victory. He said:

“There’s always mistakes in games, and most of the time they lead to goals, and that’s what happened for us. We have to learn from it.”

Most of social media at the weekend would have you believe that the referee was the main reason for Leeds’ defeat, so it is refreshing to see Bamford unhappy at the performance. Particular individuals such as Diego Llorente rightfully deserve more scrutiny than the referee.

Soundly beaten, yes, but some players made that easy to happen. It was a poor showing for The Whites regardless of what the officials and VAR did (or didn’t) do. Brentford were deserved winners.

Leeds welcome Bamford’s old side, Nottingham Forest, to Elland Road next Monday, and will look to put things right. Bamford himself will be hoping to be in contention from the start this time. It will be interesting to see if any other changes are made, with Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling also returning to full fitness.
