Last night saw the debut of Alex Mowatt, another one in a long line of Leeds academy products. To make his debut even special it was against Doncaster Rovers, Alex’s local team. This was a big chance for the young man from Scawthorpe, with his family in attendance and backed by a very large following from the Leeds faithful Alex had a debut to remember.
Within the first few minutes of the game he was looking to get the ball, looking eager to play, he would also come very deep to get the ball. Alex immediately showed a willingness to get on the ball as much as he could. When on the ball the first thing he did was look for a Leeds player to pass to and made it look very little effort.
Alex put in maximum effort, throughout the game. He looked very quick and like he has an eye for a pass. Overall Alex shone in what was an overall easy victory for Leeds, with goals from Wootton, Smith and McCormack.
Alex also earned high praise from Leeds boss Brian McDermott after the game. McDermott said: “There is no doubt that he’s good enough and you’ve seen it for yourself here. He can play and it won’t faze him playing at Elland Road or in this team.” So can we expect Mowatt to feature in a few league matches now?
I certainly think he should be given the chance, after last night. Alex proved yet again what a fantastic job the Leeds United academy staff are doing and how much talent we have in our youth. Alex shows a path for other youngsters to follow and can be a real role model for other youngsters trying to push in the team.
