With Leeds’ interest in Wigan’s Joe Gelhardt no secret, Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post also let-on that he wasn’t the only player amongst Wigan’s ranks that Leeds have taken an interest in.
Most Championship observers would agree that relegation, and the circumstances surrounding their administration, were an extremely harsh punishment for Paul Cook’s side, who otherwise performed above expectations in the 2019/20 Championship.
There is the fact however, that relegation often activates clauses in contracts where players can be sold for amounts often lower than their true value.
This is apparent in the contract of left-back Antonee Robinson, who the Telegraph report has a release clause of £1.5 million. Since this fact emerged he has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs.
Robinson was recently in the news as he was subject to the dramatic collapse of a deadline day deal, that would have seen him move to Italian giants AC Milan in a $13 million dollar move. However, sufficient medical testing could not be performed before the window closed.
Robinson’s value, age and talent represents serious value at £1.5 million. With Leeds needing to strengthen their squad and boost numbers ahead of their first Premier League campaign in 16 years, this move may be what they call a ‘no brainer’.
