Marcelo Bielsa has explained that both Kalvin Phillips and Helder Costa missed Leeds United’s defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion with ‘knocks’.
Leeds were on the end of their first defeat in six yesterday, losing out 2-0 at the AMEX Stadium thanks to a Pascal Gross penalty and Danny Welbeck’s second-half finish.
However, the Whites were unable to call on Phillips and Costa, after the pair picked up knocks.
As per Leeds Live, Bielsa explained that Phillips’ knock was in the knee, whilst Costa was suffering the effects of a heavy blow to his back in last weekend’s draw with Manchester United.
Kalvin received a knock which created a hematoma behind his knee.
And Helder had a knock in his spine and it left him out of the game. It was a knock that he received in the game against Manchester United which forced him off in that game.
Phillips was replaced by Robin Koch in the midfield, whilst a reshuffle also saw Stuart Dallas make a rare start on the wing in the place of Costa.
Raphinha remains absent but there was a return for Rodrigo Moreno at Brighton.
Phillips has been so impressive this season but he has picked up a number of problems over the season, missing a lot of games due to injury.
That’s all part of the game, admittedly, but Leeds need to find some genuine cover for him in the summer market, as performance levels dip so badly when he’s not available.
In terms of Costa, it only adds to the frustration at how the tackle on him against Man United went unpunished.
We are still feeling the effects of Raphinha’s injury after a horror tackle from Fernandinho against City, and it looks like we are going to be doing the same with Costa now.
