Marcelo Bielsa is closing in on a return to management, with the Argentine set to be appointed as the new manager of the Uruguayan national side – his first role since leaving Leeds United.

Bielsa has been out of work for over a year since leaving the Whites last season. He was sacked on the 27th of February by the club and has been in the search for a new role since.

The Argentine oversaw one of the best periods in Leeds’ recent history in winning promotion in 2019/20 back to the Premier League after a 16-season absence from the English top flight.

Bielsa is a legend among the majority of Leeds fans, and managed 170 games with the club spanning a four-and-a-half year period.

What is the latest with Bielsa since leaving Leeds?

According to Argentina-based journalist César Luis Merlo of TyC Sports, Bielsa will sign a contract with the Uruguay until the end of their World Cup qualifiers.

There is the option to extend the deal if the South American nation qualify for the World Cup, which will be held in Canada, USA and Mexico in 2026.

The 67-year-old is on the verge of succeeding Diego Alonso. Alonso left his post as head coach after less than a year in charge following Uruguay’s disappointing group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar during the winter.

Negotiations are reportedly in the final stages, and would not be the first South-American based nation Bielsa will have taken charge of.

Bielsa was in charge of his native Argentina between for seven years during the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and also spent time as Chile’s manager between 2007 and 2011, too.
