Leeds United transfer rumours

Now that the fixtures are out, all attention turns to the transfer window and to see who Leeds will bring in. It appears Leeds are finally getting a move on, with many names linked over the past few days. Here we will round-up the rumours so far:

Jonny Howson – One of the earliest rumours of the transfer window and most exciting. Howson is set to want to move back north for family reasons, though Leeds aren’t the only club interested with a host of Championship clubs interested and a few Premier League sides too. Howson would instantly improve our team but would also cost a hefty fee, if this one is going to happen, expect it sooner rather than later.

Bernado Espinosa – With Kyle Bartley looking less likely to join Leeds by the hour, Middlesbrough centre-back Espinosa is an obvious choice. The Columbian centre-back joined Boro last year from Sporting Gijón and didn’t have the best of times, he was their third choice centre-back, playing eleven league games. Victor Orta is familiar with Espinosa from his time at Sevilla. At 27, he should have his prime years ahead of him. It’s worth mentioning that Espinosa is just short of 6’4, meaning we’d have one of the taller centre-back partnerships in the league.

Mateusz Klich – Leeds reportedly have had an initial bid declined, as we wrote about here. However the move is expected to go through, with the player pushing for a move. Klich is a box-to-box midfielder who also takes penalties, hence his six goals last season for FC Twente. If Leeds so sign Klich, it’s probably a bad sign on the Howson front.

Ezgjan Alioski – As we wrote last night, Leeds have reportedly made contact with Swiss side Lugano about signing Macedonian winger Alioski, with only formalities stopping him from being a Leeds player. If you want to get excited only to be let down, watch this video of his goals .

Samu Sáiz – Leeds have reportedly bid for Sáiz, who plays as an attacking midfielder for Spanish second division side Huesca, though he previously played for Atletico, Madrid and Getafe’s B teams. This would be a surprising move considering he’s 26 and has never made it in La Liga, though you never know what could happen. Check out this video to see what he’s all about

It’s safe to say the targets so far are unknowns to most Leeds fans, though that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be poor. According to Alan Nixon, Leeds are also close to signing a player from another English side, though there’s no names on that so far.

I personally don’t see Howson coming. The transfer fee would be high and the wages a killer. Unfortunately footballers today don’t play for sentiment but only for as much hard cash as they can get.
The dream of home grown players returning is I fear just a dream. I didn’t work out with Batty nor with John Charles.

I’d like to see Howson return and Klich signed, as well. Charlie Adam is also available on a free transfer, if one of those transfers doesn’t come off. Central defender Liam Lindsay would also be worth signing and he wouldn’t cost much. The quality free transfers will soon be snapped up and there are some very good free transfer players, who would certainly improve the Leeds team, but their wages could be a problem.
