Pascal Struijk played 45 minutes for Leeds United as they beat Barnsley 3-1 on Wednesday night at Elland Road.

Struijk, normally a centre-back, played at left-back again, perhaps a sign of what may continue against Brighton at the weekend.

He has started every game so far this season at left-back, and despite his lack of pace he seems to be growing into the role somewhat.

He took to Instagram to show his delight at qualifying for the next round of the competition.

Perhaps most interestingly, was captain Liam Cooper’s nickname in the comments for the 23-year-old. He dubbed him “Carlos”, comparing him to legendary Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos.

Although Liam Cooper’s remark may be seen as tongue in cheek, it does illustrate Struijk’s growing reputation as an alternative in the role.

Jesse Marsch confirmed in his pre-match Brighton presser that Junior Firpo is nearing full fitness as he is back in training again, but he may struggle to start straight away on the basis of four games unbeaten and a positive start to the season at left-back for Struijk.

Quiz: Are these 15 statements about Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk true or false?

1 of 20

Struijk was born in 1999?

Firpo is the only recognised senior left-back at the club, so if Struijk is able to fill in then this will be a huge bonus for Leeds. Particularly with regards to Firpo’s poor injury record since he joined the club.

Despite not being as natural at left-back, he is a comfortable player on the ball, and will play line-breaking passes on the floor more than any of Leeds’ other centre-backs at the club. Both Cooper and Diego Llorente prefer a diagonal ball in the air as opposed to an incisive ball on the floor through the thirds of the pitch.

Ultimately, his long-term future is at centre-back, but he has started the season impressively.
