Leeds United’s out-on-loan winger Ian Poveda starred on his Sheffield Wednesday debut, registering an assist in a crucial 2-0 win on Friday night.

Leeds let a handful of players leave the club during the January window, with some of them heading to other clubs in the Championship.

Their final outgoing saw Ian Poveda head to South Yorkshire with Sheffield Wednesday, making his debut on Friday night at home to a fellow struggler in Birmingham City.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Birmingham City: Poveda dazzles on debut

Having threatened to showcase some of his skill under Daniel Farke but never really getting going for Leeds, Poveda had a chance to lead the way for his new club under Danny Rohl.

Starting at Hillsborough on Friday night, Poveda set the Owls on their way to a vital win to move closer to safety, with his nifty footwork on the by-line seeing him cut back smartly to Ike Ugbo for the opening goal.

The Colombia international very nearly got a stunning goal of his own not long after as he tied Ivan Sunjic in knots to curl from the edge of the box, only to go narrowly wide.

Ugbo got a second for the home side to bring a crucial three points to Wednesday, with Poveda scooping up the Man of the Match award on his 24th birthday.

Poveda takes to Instagram and receives multiple messages from Leeds players

It couldn’t have been a better debut for the winger, and he posted on Instagram to share his delight at getting off to a flyer with his new club:

Amongst those commenting were a number of his Leeds teammates, who said this:

Delight for Poveda getting meaningful opportunities

Poveda looked like someone who could have an impact at Leeds this season, but that wasn’t the case with our attacking depth too strong.

However, getting this chance at Wednesday could be what he needs after two mixed loans elsewhere in the Championship.

His performance throughout the game showed that he’s more than worth a starting role in the second tier, he just needs consistency.
