What a game! The first half was like listening to any Leeds game from the last 10 years on a Tuesday night. After that however, it was a bit different. Here’s our player ratings:

Andy Lonergan – 8 – Made some brilliant saves, was tested a lot more than Felix has been so far and without the help of Jansson and Cooper, I thought he was excellent.

Into the defence…

Gaetano Berardi – 9 – My MOTM, he put in a performance that was just vintage Berardi. He won every tackle he went in for including a hard tackle on Charlie Taylor which I enjoyed immensely. This picture sums up his performance and the man in general, really.

Luke Ayling – 8 – Possibly his best performance at centre-back for us, he lead by example and never looked out-of-place, a really impressive showing.

Conor Shaughnessy – 8 –
To say centre-back isn’t his natural position, he doesn’t half look at home there. He’s yet to have a poor game for Leeds, what a start to his career.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – 5 – I was in favour of CBJ coming back into the team, we probably won’t see him again anytime soon. A very poor performance from CBJ, he looked slow in every phase and was far too sloppy with the ball.

Into the midfield…

Ronaldo Vieira – 8 – Vieira showed what we’ve been missing without him, he’s so physical and is immense at breaking up attacks when they’re about to get serious. His passing was very decent tonight too.

Mateusz Klich – 9 – Hadn’t seen enough of him before tonight to know what he’s all about but he was top quality tonight. Klich was all over the pitch making tackles and starting attacks. His penalty was cool as you like, too. Christiansen has a decision on his hands with our midfield on Saturday.

Kemar Roofe – 7 – Roofe put in a big shift tonight, he didn’t stand out quite as much as some others but he made some nice runs and kept hold of the ball well.

Into the attack…

Paweł Cibicki – 6 – Cibicki started the game very brightly and worked extremely hard but had little end product. It’s not too surprising, his first game for Leeds in an XI that haven’t played together before in a real game situation. I’m sure he’ll show more as the season goes on.

Stuart Dallas – 7 – Dallas seems to have gained a yard or so of pace this season. He almost seems like a different player to last season and I must say, I’m enjoying it.

Jay-Roy Grot – 6 – I was slightly disappointed with Grot tonight, he didn’t hold the ball up well enough and his one chance he hit straight at the keeper. Don’t get me wrong I’m not writing him off or anything, he’s 19. It’s clear though that he has a lot of learning to do.

Hadi Sacko – 9 – One of Sacko’s best performances in a Leeds shirt. I can’t lie, I’m not a fan. However, if he plays like that on the regular I definitely would be. He beat Charlie Taylor and co for fun and took his goal extremely well.

Pablo Hernandez – 8 – You could say he changed the game, just look at this pass he played for Sacko’s goal…

More good news – depth of squad great!
Perhaps tonight’s midfield should get the nod for the Millwall-style (physical) games, the usual suspects for the rest – certainly Christiansen has options across the park to guide us through different types of opponent, as well as covering for injury, suspension and form-dip issues – and looks a manager capable of using his riches wisely.

  • Shandisco says:

Was “undercover” in the mix with the Burnley fans tonight and couldn’t stop myself from cheering the first goal!! Great team performance. CBJ wasn’t interested tonight but Shaughnessy and Klich stood out for me. Calm under pressure. Shows what strength we have in depth. Good tactical change from TC to change things at the back. MOT

  • Tim says:

It’s a long long time since we have had a squad that gives the manager a selection headache. However, whoever starts on Saturday still leaves us with options all over the bench.

  • Henryv says:

Mateusz Klich seems to be getting to full fitness after his pre-season injuries.
Just at the right time to give options in mid-field.
Ronaldo needs games too now, and got stronger as the gam e went on!!
    Well done the boys!!
