Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling are set to make their Leeds United returns this weekend when Marcelo Bielsa’s side host Brentford at Elland Road.

Leeds have been without the pair since September’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United and have largely struggled in their absence.

Bamford has had ankle ligament trouble, whilst Ayling had minor surgery on a knee injury.

However, after making a comeback with Leeds’ U23s in the week gone by, both could now feature for the first-team against Brentford on Sunday.

As per Phil Hay on Twitter, Bielsa has confirmed that Bamford and Ayling are ‘likely’ to be available for Sunday’s game, with neither set to feature for the U23s again.

Bamford scored 17 goals for Leeds last season, spearheading Bielsa’s side to ninth in the Premier League table.

Ayling, meanwhile, was a consistent figure at right-back, as he has been throughout Bielsa’s spell as head coach.

This really is a huge, huge boost for Leeds ahead of another important meeting with Brentford.

It’s no coincidence that Bielsa’s toughest spell at Leeds has come without Bamford and Ayling in the side. Both have been so important to him over his three years in-charge, so to miss them for nine fixtures was always going to hurt.

Whether either are fit enough to start this weekend, it’s hard to know, but their sheer presence on the bench will lift Elland Road even further.
