Leeds United are looking to make a move for departed Swansea City left-back Ryan Manning on a free transfer this summer.

Leeds are going to have to plan for life back in the Championship this summer as they look all set to finish in the bottom three this weekend with two points separating them and safety as things stand.

As we look ahead to what is expected to be a return to the EFL, scouting could already be taking place in order to see Leeds hit the ground running in the new season.

Football League World have reported this week that Leeds are keeping a close eye on the situation of Ryan Manning, who is leaving Swansea City upon the expiry of his contract, having spent three years in South Wales.

Here, we look at two reasons why this is a very smart move for Leeds this summer…

Brilliant value for money

Even though Leeds are going to be boasting more riches than the vast majority of their Championship counterparts, signing players on the cheaper side is always wise.

So when a top-performer in his position from last season emerges as a bargain free transfer, it’s a deal you have to be looking at securing.

Manning ended the season with five goals and 10 assists, while scooping up Swansea’s Player of the Season award – voted by the fans.

Such an output from left-back is hard to come by in the second tier, and when it’s available for nothing, you have to make your move.

Leeds need defensive improvements

If it wasn’t already abundantly clear based on the last two seasons at Elland Road, the defence needs improvements across the board.

Left-back in particular has been a major cause for concern with Junior Firpo the only natural option to the position, and he’s someone we’d expect to leave if relegation is confirmed tomorrow.

Manning would come in as a versatile option able to play in a back three or back four, offering quality at both ends of the pitch.

Leeds will be looking to the talents of Leo Hjelde on the left side of defence next season too, but Manning’s experience at 26-years-old is vital.
