Leeds United player ratings v Millwall

|

Leeds moved into the top-half of the Championship after a solid win against Millwall at Elland Road. But how did each player do? These are my ratings.

Marco Silvestri – 6 – He had a decent game but he still looks a bit soft for a keeper, for me. He never seems to catch the ball, just flaps at it. He seems a bit like a better Casper Ankergren, really good shot-stopper though.

Scott Wootton – 7 – Wootton is having a very decent spell in the team, especially when you consider that he’s actually a centre-back, not a right-back. He allows Sam Byram to stay forward and we are seeing the positives of this now.

Sol Bamba – 8 – I am extremely happy with the signing of Bamba, maybe Salerno’s best signing. Obviously its early days but the way he commands the back line is excellent, he wins almost every header and lets the striker know that he’s there when he does, he’s really good to watch. Could quite easily be a cult hero.

Giuseppe Bellusci – 6 – He had a decent game in parts, but he’s too much of a liability, twice yesterday he basically gave Millwall a free chance. If we were playing a better team yesterday then we concede so we were lucky. He has his good games though, like Reading away, I think Cooper and Bamba is the way to go.

Charlie Taylor – 8 – Taylor has surprised me, I knew he was a decent prospect but he’s just come in since Warnock left and been even better. He gives us more pace going forward and the defensive side of his game is great too. He could be our left-back for years to come.

Luke Murphy – 8 – Murphy had another great game, the change in form from him is just ridiculous. He controls the midfield easily and seems to go past people for fun, when you consider he doesn’t really have pace it’s strange really. He is beginning to look like a £1m player.

Lewis Cook – 7 – Another good game from Lewis, he really needs a contract, now. I genuinely think he could fit into most Premier League teams now but I do think he should stay here for at least another year for his development. The way he brings the ball forward is ridiculous and he makes it look so easy. He’s only 18, mental.

Sam Byram – 8 – Byram is flourishing in his new forward role, his pace is a real trouble to defences and he’s starting to get into goalscoring situations, he was unlucky not to score yesterday. He’s another player that Premier League clubs will be looking at, I hope we can keep him.

Rodolph Austin – 6 – Austin was decent yesterday but didn’t offer too much, he just did a lot of running. He was unlucky to be booked for diving, it was never a dive. I would have preferred to see Sloth given a chance, as he played well against Reading.

Alex Mowatt – 9 – I thought Mowatt had an excellent game, to say he doesn’t have much pace he was a real threat down the left, a lot of our attacks came from that side. He’s got a real talent for freekicks too, but he needs to work on his corners, they hit the first man frequently. He could use a new contract, too.

Steve Morison – 7 – I do actually feel sorry for Steve, he played really well yesterday in every aspect apart from his finishing. He had so many opportunities to shoot where he chose to pass instead and you can tell he’s just lacking confidence. When he did shoot, he should have done better. I hope it comes right for him soon, nobody else we have really fits into this formation upfront.

Good assessments. For me Taylor was the best player on view. Mowatt plays very well for someone who lacks pace and does not easily find space; Cook is obviously an outstanding prospect, but with much to learn, particularly when to release the ball. Morison had an excellent game, but obviously lacks confidence in the goal-scoring Department, though none of his so-called chances (few of them ever really are) was easy. I still don’t know what Austin is for but the rest did fine, even Bellusci who made several very strong tackles, as wel as committing the now customar howler. It would have been interesting to see the left footed Pearce alongside Bamba……
