Leeds United player ratings v Ipswich

An interesting game to say the least, a lot of good and quite a lot of bad too. The main thing though is that we won and we remain top of the table ahead of Tuesday’s clash against Cardiff. Into the ratings…

Felix Wiedwald – 4 – I’ve decided I’m just not a fan of him. He looked dodgy all through the day whether it was with his feet or his hands and the second Ipswich goal was all on him. Needs to improve massively. I know we’ve had a lot of clean sheets but that’s largely down to the defence and Jansson.

Into the defence…

Luke Ayling – 7 – Didn’t have the easiest game up against a good Ipswich side but stuck to his task well and helped out well in attack.

Conor Shaughnessy – 8 – His ball through to Lasogga for the first goal was exquisite and his tackle at the death could have saved the game for us. He had a few dodgy moments but that’s to be expected from someone of his age still learning the position.

Liam Cooper – 7 – It was good to have Cooper back and he led by example once again. However you can really tell the difference when Jansson isn’t playing, hopefully he’s back for Cardiff.

Vurnon Anita – 6 – Made a good clearance off the line but I didn’t think he was too assured today, was replaced by Berardi midway through the second half, expect Gaetano to start on Tuesday.

Into the midfield…

Eunan O’Kane – 8 – Made a few errors but more than made up for it with his constant battling which resulted in him winning the ball back in key areas of the pitch.

Kalvin Phillips – 9 – My MOTM, he got his goal purely because he wanted it more, with a good finish too. Along with that he won so many tackles and headers today he was all over the pitch and it was great to see after a down week at Millwall.

Samu Sáiz – 8 – His awareness is magical, add that to a beauty of a right foot and you’ve really got something there. He gave Ipswich problems all day and played a great ball via his head to Kalvin for the goal.

Into the attack…

Ezgjan Alioski – 7 –
Alioski had everything apart from the final ball today. He got into so many positions where he could have done more and just chose the wrong option, still a joy to watch though.

Pablo Hernandez – 8 – His passing range is ridiculous, he can turn a dodgy situation into a goal-scoring chance in a flash. Oh yeah, he scored from a corner too, take a bow keeper…

Pierre-Michel Lasogga – 7 – Took his goal extremely well and that is what he’s there for. However I did think he was a bit of a passenger in the second half especially.

A win is a win and without doubt the return of Jansson will be huge. This tweet I put out sums up my feelings well…

Wiedwald is a problem for us.
He is a flapper and does not command his box.
That is why we got him cheap.
    May be false economy.
I thought Lonergan would start today.
There may be a few changes at Cardiff but I bet TC won’t change the GK.

  • David says:

Agreed. I am furious with Weidweld. Dodgy as anything. Their second goal was 100% down to him. He’s not commanding in the air either. A very poor decision to bring him into the club, and an even poorer decision to make him the number one keeper. Not many mistakes this season from VO and TC, but this is one of the mistakes.

Shut up moaning. Jesus. Listen to you two.

  • Irving08 says:

Did we get one cross in today ? If so, I cannot recall it. For years we have craved pace on the flanks yet today we played without anyone out wide with the pace to get behind the full backs. In fact, there is little pace in any position – Saiz’s twists and turns notwithstanding.

  • Asim says:

Our defence was certainly very poor and will be found out eventually. We were dominated by Birmingham in the second half, completely hammered by rubbish Millwall and yet again especially in the second half outplayed by Ipswich, I can see a very worrying trend, let’s hope they start to dominate teams again starting with Cardiff on Tuesday.
