Leeds United have been named as one of the secondary sides interested in signing AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, who is a prime target for Tottenham currently.

Leeds have had a solid January window so far with Max Wöber and Georginio Rutter joining the club to strengthen at both ends of the pitch.

More could be on the cards for Leeds before the window shuts at the end of the month, as Victor Orta remains a busy man in scouting potential new signings.

AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo emerged as a surprise target for Leeds last week – per Calciomercato – as his future in the Italian capital remains in doubt.

A host of Premier League clubs are named in the report, while Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tottenham are the club locked in talks to sign him this month.

Now, Alfredo Pedulla is reporting that Leeds and West Ham are the two sides that could be a “Plan B” for Zaniolo, should talks with Tottenham break down this month.

Jose Mourinho confirmed recently that the Italy international wants to leave Roma this month, as his contract entered the final 18 months, but the former Spurs manager also stressed that a departure might not materialise for him.

Zaniolo would be a huge signing for Leeds to pull off, which is why I don’t think it’s at all likely that it could happen.

We’ve already spent a club-record fee to sign Rutter this month, so bringing in Zaniolo would be committing to another fee in that region.

Not only that, but Zaniolo isn’t a midfielder, and that is the signing that we need right now, so he’s a luxury more than a necessity.
