Liam Cooper and a handful of other Premier League names have been investigated by clubs for reportedly leaking team news via Fantasy Premier League.
In an era where information is so readily accessible for fans and the media, it’s not entirely difficult to find inklings of team news from doing some digging.
As fans prepare their squads every week for Fantasy Premier League, the latest injury and team news is like gold dust.
So any indication, that might not be available by conventional means, that a certain player is out is much sought-after.
Gjanni Alioski started on the bench for Leeds against Wolves and ended a run of 16 consecutive starts in the process.
It might have made tactical sense to make the switch after his Arsenal performances but there were no clues that this were to be the case.
However, the Athletic have reported that Leeds are looking into the fact that Liam Cooper made the switch to take out Alioski in his FPL team before any team news was delivered by Marcelo Bielsa.
Cooper’s blunder was picked up on by some eagle-eyed fans on Reddit.
“It is not just Villa where team selection clues popped up this weekend. Leeds captain Liam Cooper transferred Gjanni Alioski out of his side ahead of Friday’s game against Wolves.” David Ornstein wrote.
“Alioski had started the previous 17 games in all competitions for Leeds, a run stretching back to November 7 last year, but he was absent from the start at Molineux.
“Leeds’ player and staff league was discovered by users of website Reddit earlier in February, making this information easily accessible.
“Changes have also been made by staff members at Manchester United and Fulham and highlighted by “insider” social media accounts.”
It seems a very minor indiscretion but one that undermines the work the club does to keep such injuries and changes under wraps to avoid them being blown out of proportion.
It makes no difference to Cooper if he waits until a press conference to transfer out these players that he has.
I’m sure it’s something that both clubs and the players will be keeping a close eye on in the future to avoid such information leaking.
We predicted on LeedsAllOver that Alioski was to be dropped anyway based on the tactical dilemma that faced Bielsa after defeat to Arsenal.
