Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris is a legendary figure in his home country of France.

That’s according to his fellow goalkeeper and countryman, Illan Meslier of Leeds United.

At 35-years-old, Lloris is now approaching the latter stages of his career, and recently announced his retirement from international football.

That comes after captaining France to the last two World Cup finals, being crowned champions in 2018 in the process.

Following his progress with Leeds, Meslier is one who could be a contender to take over Lloris’ role with the national team.

That could also be the case at club level, with Spurs previously credited with holding the strongest interest in Elland Road shotstopper.

Now it seems that if he is to step into either of those roles, he will be taking over from someone he has a great admiration for.

Giving his verdict on Lloris in an interview with NBC Sports, Meslier said: “I saw Hugo when he was at Nice and Lyon.

And of course, I saw him growing up in Tottenham. So of course, he is honestly a legend, a French legend,”

You can understand why Meslier holds Lloris in such high regard.

While the Spurs ‘keeper is undoubtedly one more than capable of making some high profile errors, that will not take away from the fact he has played a significant role in some major French footballing success.

As a result, a fellow Frenchman such as Meslier, is only ever going to hold him in high regard, particularly given he too, understands the challenges of being a ‘keeper.

You wonder therefore, whether the chance to follow in Lloris’ footsteps with both club and country for Meslier, could help Spurs if they pursue a deal to sign him at some point in the future.
