Leeds United’s hopes of signing Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson appear to have been a significant blow.

That’s after a report from The Telegraph claimed that Salzburg are planning to keep Aarnson until at least the end of the season.

Aaronson joined Salzburg from Philadelphia Union in his native United States back in January, and has since made 51 appearances in all competitions for the Austrian giants, scoring ten goals.

The 21-year-old has also been capped 15 times at senior international level by the USA, seemingly attracting plenty of attention from elsewhere, with recent reports claiming Leeds are plotting a January move for the midfielder.

Now however, it seems as though Leeds could be left disappointed with any attempt that they make to sign Aaronson next month.

According to this latest update, Salzburg intend to keep Aaronson until at least the end of the campaign, with their Champions League Round of 16 clash with Bayern Munich a major influence in their planning.

As things stand, there are still three-and-a-half years remaining on Aaronson’s contract with Slazburg, securing his future with the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.

This may well be frustrating for those of a Leeds United persuasion.

A midfielder clearly has to be high on the agenda for the Whites in January, and Aaronson could have been a useful addition in that position.

His experience at a high level means he could certainly have made an impact at Elland Road, while at 21-year-old, he could have been an asset for many years to come.

But given his current contract situation, Salzburg don’t seem to be under any pressure to sell in January, so it is probably no surprise they are taking this stance here, meaning you feel Leeds may well have to explore other midfield options as we head into January.
