With a fee apparently agreed between the two clubs, it seems Phillips is moving ever closer to a move from Leeds to Manchester City this summer.
Should that happen, the Elland Road club will inevitably have to find a replacement in the centre of the park, and reports from The Yorkshire Evening Post have revealed that Adams is a target for that role.
Now it seems that if Leeds are to pursue such a deal, it is one that may not take them long to do at all.
According to this latest update, it is expected that Adams will move on from Leipzig quickly this summer, if a bid comes in from elsewhere.
Adams is reportedly unhappy about his game time at the club, having started just 12 Bundesliga games during the 2021/22 campaign.
Meanwhile, Leipzig have already signed a replacement for the USA international, with Xaver Schlager joining from rivals Wolfsburg, further opening the door for Adams’ potential departure.
This certainly looks to be something of a boost for Leeds in their search to replace Phillips.
The job that the England international does for this squad is a hugely important one, so they are not going to want any uncertainty lingering over who takes that role.
Beyond that, the sooner someone such as Adams comes in to take over that position, the longer they are going to have to settle in and prepare for the new campaign.
As a result, you get the feeling this is a situation that Leeds need to be keeping a close eye on over the course of the next few weeks.
