Neal Maupay’s 17th minute goal inflicted defeat on Leeds United this afternoon as Brighton and Hove Albion won 1-0 at Elland Road.

Leeds were second best or large parts of the first-half, with Maupay on the end of sweeping move on 17 minutes to score another goal against a Marcelo Bielsa side.

Bielsa watched his side put more pressure on Brighton after half-time, but clear chances evaded Leeds throughout and they never truly tested Robert Sanchez.

Here are the LeedsAllOver player ratings…

Kiko Casilla – 5

A worrying inclusion but, actually, had little to do apart from pick the ball out of his net after Maupay struck.

Stuart Dallas – 5

Decent enough in the first-half and looked to make things happen going forwards. However, a very tired second-half performance.

Luke Ayling – 5

Poor marking saw him leave Maupay with so much room to score the game’s only goal. Would be nice to see him back at right-back as we get more bodies back in defence.

Liam Cooper – 5

Not that Maupay had much of the game or the better of Cooper, but Leeds never really looked comfortable whenever Brighton broke. It was a tough all-round afternoon.

Ezgjan Alioski – 4

A lovely ball on six minutes that should have been capitalised on by Rodrigo. However, his performance wasn’t quite built on that moment and he was hooked as Leeds chased the game.

Pascal Struijk – 4

A huge job of replacing Kalvin Phillips and a tough afternoon for the Dutchman. A square peg in a round hole and that’s always going to be the case.

Jack Harrison – 6

Came closest for Leeds with a curling effort and tried to make things happen on the right. Enjoyed a good battle with the impressive Solly March.

Mateusz Klich – 4

Something isn’t quite right about Klich at the moment. He’s off the boil and it’s really impacting Leeds’ transitions from defence into attack.

Whether he’s trying too hard to avoid a suspension, I’m not sure. His rating is generous, though.

Rodrigo M. – 4

Spoke about how Covid-19 had impacted his fitness in the week and his performances since returning have been leggy. Bielsa really needs more from his club-record signing.

Raphinha – 4

Another attacking player that really struggled today. Strangely used on the left rather than the right, which played into Brighton and Dan Burn’s hands.

Patrick Bamford – 5

Hardly involved, which was down to how bad Leeds were building up play into him. A really frustrating shift.

SUBS

Tyler Roberts – 6

Injected something that was missing from Rodrigo in Leeds’ link play and did well on the whole. Took a ball off Ayling’s toes that was begging to be lashed in, though.

Pablo Hernandez – 5

Not quite himself but tried to get Leeds going at least. Wonder whether a start for him might be just around the corner now.

Ian Poveda – 5

Little impact from the winger.
